PLAIN AND CIVIL: EXAMPLE 2.9.2. ESTIMATING CIRCULAR COLUMNS USING THE TWO METHODS

Estimate the materials needed for 6 facade columns of 60cm diameter and 6m height. Columns are embedded at 1.2m under the ground. Use class A mixture.

Volume method: Use the volume as a multiplier for the table of mixture proportions.

$Vol_{cols}=6\left [ \frac{\pi \left ( 0.60m \right )^{2}}{4} \left ( 6m+1.2m \right )\right ]=12.2145m^{3}$

Class A (1:2:4) proportions from the table:

$Cement=9.0\left ( 12.2145m^{3} \right )=109.9305\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{110bags\left ( 40kg \right )}}$

$Sand=0.5\left ( 12.2145m^{3} \right )\left ( 1.25 \right )=7.6341\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{8m^{3}}}$

$Gravel=1.0\left ( 12.2145m^{3} \right )=12.2145\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{12.50m^{3}}}$

Linear Meter Method: Determine the total length (height) of the columns and check proportions from the table.

$height_{cols}=6\left ( 6m+1.2m \right )=43.20m$

For circular columns of 60cm with class A:

$Cement=2.545\left ( 43.20m \right )=109.944\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{110bags\left ( 40kg \right )}}$

$Sand=0.141\left ( 43.20m \right )\left ( 1.25 \right )=7.614\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{8m^{3}}}$

$Gravel=0.282\left ( 43.20m \right )=12.1824\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{12.50m^{3}}}$
