PLAIN AND CIVIL: EXAMPLE 2.9.1. ESTIMATING A CIRCULAR COLUMN USING THE TWO METHODS

Estimate the materials needed for a class A mixture of a column 90cm in diameter and 7m high.

Using the volume method:

$Vol_{col}=\frac{\pi \left ( diameter \right )^{2}}{4}\left ( height \right )$

$Vol_{col}=\frac{\pi \left ( 0.90m \right )^{2}}{4}\left ( 7m \right )=4.4532m^{3}$

Using class A mixture: (1:2:4)

   $Cement=4.4532m^{3}\left ( 9.0 \right )=40.0789\simeq \mathbf{{\color{Red} }41bags\left ( 40kg \right )}$

   $Sand=1.25\left ( 4.4532m^{3} \right )\left ( 0.50 \right )=2.7833\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{3m^{3}}}$

   $Gravel=4.4532m^{3}\left ( 1.0 \right )=4.4532\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{4.50m^{3}}}$

Using Linear Meter Method with class A:

Cement = 5.726
Sand = 0.318
Gravel = 0.636

$Cement=5.726\left ( 7m \right )=40.082\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{41bags\left ( 40kg \right )}}$

$Sand=0.318\left ( 7m \right )\left ( 1.25 \right )=2.7825\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{3.0m^{3}}}$

$Gravel=0.636\left ( 7m \right )=4.452\simeq {\color{Red} \mathbf{4.50m^{3}}}$
