EXAMPLE 7.0.2. EQUILIBRUM OF CONCURRENT COPLANAR FORCES

What is the mass of cylinder A to hold the assembly in the position shown if the mass of cylinder C is 40kg.




The FBD to be used for this problem need not necessarily be composed of forces, the forces involved can be in terms of kg rather than N. This problem involves two systems. One from cylinder C to point E and then the rope system with cylinder A. We start with the FBD of the cylinder with known mass:


               

                 

                     

This force of cable BC only translates to the other system.

             





The FB of the other rope system will reflect the 40kg pulling the mass of cylinder A.

We can solve for the mass of cylinder A by taking summation of vertical forces. There is no need to take the resultant of horizontal forces in this case.
