EXAMPLE 6.0.3: APPLICATION ON RESULTANT MOMENT OF COPLANAR COUPLES

A twist of 4N-m is applied to the handle of the screwdriver. Resolve this couple moment into a pair of couple forces F exerted on the handle and P exerted on the blade.


You might jump to a conclusion that the 4N-m is the resultant of both forces F and P. Then end up with the equation:

                                                     

                                            

The equation will leave us with two unknowns and there would not be any other equation to generate.

If you come to analyze it further, the moment of 4N-m applied on the handle will be the same moment applied on the screwdriver's head. The moment is just translated from the handle until the head. Thus:
