Engineering Mechanics - Statics by Hibbeler |
Forces applied do not always come collinearly - both lie in the same line; however, they can be grouped as coplanar if they lie on the same plane. And again, there are still some forces which are applied not just in a plane with two axes but utilizing the three axes x, y, and z. These are the spatial forces.
Although it is easy to do scalar algebra with collinear forces, the two other types would need some detailed procedures. One way of adding these forces are by Cartesian vectors and the other is by scalar computation. Both of these procedures do follow a similar process. The only difference is the utilization of a unit vector for the Cartesian vectors method. But the computation for the resultant force as well as the angle of inclination would use the same formula.
