Plans and specifications are required to make a close estimate of construction materials. The plans show elevations, plans, and details - all of which are necessary for identifying surface areas, and volumes. Estimates require these measurements in order to identify the quantity of materials needed in each component.

1.1. APPROXIMATION OF UNITS
In estimating construction materials, exact conversion of dimensions and sizes are limited to few decimal places when using SI units which is standardized in meters. Instead of using 25.4mm for an inch (0.0254m), estimates is done using 0.025m. This will make it easier to estimate proportions.
