1.0. INTRODUCTION TO SANITARY ENGINEERING

Sanitary engineering deals primarily with the promotion of health with the avoidance of diseases which are caused by various environmental factors.

The extent of sanitary engineering is listed as:


  • It is a specialist in the water supply and drainage applications to secure public health.
  • It expands to the precautions of piping in individual residences and extends to the biggest problems of sewage disposal and utilization.
  • Sanitary engineers work with bacteriologists and physicians.
  • They secure sanitary requirements with respect to fresh and tempered air supply of enclosed structures.

1.1 COURSE STUDY IN SANITARY ENGINEERING


Similar to other technical courses, training with other engineering branches as well as natural sciences are required for this profession:


  • The study includes mathematics, astronomy, geometry as well as physical sciences, mechanics, hydraulics, aerostatics, study of heat, optics, acoustics, magnetism and electricity (physics).
  • The profession requires knowledge in engineering structures, construction principles, strength of materials, and stability of structures.
  • Sanitary engineers should be good at drafting.
  • With the basic engineering courses, the profession also requires a course in sanitary science - health and diseases.
