"Profession" is "act of professing" according to Oxford Shorter Dictionary. The meaning since then evolved as "vocation in which professed knowledge of some branch of learning is used in its application to the affairs of others, or in the practice of an art based upon it."

There is a difference between a high-paying occupation and a profession. While the former term means simply a way to make a living, profession is gained through a series of characteristics:

- Control of services
