FLUID MECHANICS

The term "fluids" covers both the liquids and gases - two types of matter. The air alone would be considered surrounding us, and there are rivers and oceans near us. Studying fluids is a vital field for civil engineering.

Fluid mechanics is a field in civil engineering which deals with the fundamental behavior of liquids and gases - fluids. These types of matter are known to statically deform when stresses are applied. With fluid mechanics, various sub-disciplines are developed such as hydraulics and water resources.

This course covers the following as preparation for Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering:

  • Introduction
  • Fundamental properties of fluids
  • Pressure
  • Hydrostatics: Total hydrostatic pressure on surfaces
    • Thin-walled vessels
    • Dams
  • Principle of Archimedes
  • Stability of bodies
  • Flow of ideal real fluids
  • Classification of flow types
  • Momentum equations
  • Energy systems
