APPROXIMATE METHODS FOR INDETERMINATE STRUCTURES

There are three basic equations used for identifying forces in structural members either with applied gravity loads or lateral loads. These are the equilibrium forces - summation of horizontal forces, summation of vertical forces, and summation of moments. With only these three basic equations available, the first condition in structural analysis is to make certain that the structure is determinate. However, there are cases where indeterminacy is observed in the structure. With this problem at hand, there are approximate methods for analysis:
